Had an interesting discussion with a fellow IFR driver yesterday and the issue was: how to maintain IFR currency AND maintain social distancing? For the past 60 days or so I have continued to fly both precision and non-precision instrument approaches in VMC conditions to maintain proficiency and not logging them due to the absence of the required safety pilot. My two goals are 1) remain proficient and, 2) maintain social distancing. Full stop. Because my IFR currency extends to August 30th, I will continue to practice single pilot IFR. Again, not logging them. When and if actual IFR conditions present themselves, I will fly my re-currency approaches, holds and navigation requirements. Again, as single pilot IFR knowing that I am as prepared as I can be. Note: The vast majority of instrument approaches in my experience are through a layer or layers and not to minimums. And I've likely flown more holds in actual IMC conditions during training than otherwise. There are of course other options: 1) Fly with a safety pilot as per usual. 2) Fly with a CFII. Many flight schools are still operating. 3) Fly your approaches on a certified simulator. Each option has its risks. I maintain proficiency by remaining familiar with reading approach plates, setting up the navigators, keeping a good instrument scan, practicing good single pilot CRM, coupling the autopilot to reduce workload, rehearsing communications and the like - and I can keep the Infection Control Department of the Ya Ya Sisterhood happy (I agree with them). Out of currency, BFR's, IPC's and instrument check rides are entirely different issues altogether and beyond this discussion. Does anyone else have any other ideas? What have the local CFII's suggested? |
